New Jersey health officials have confirmed that an Elizabeth elementary school student who died last week did have the flu.
Officials declined to release any additional information about the case, citing privacy concerns.
Daniela Genara is the third child in New Jersey to die from the flu, in what officials are calling one of the worst flu seasons on record.
Elizabeth school officials sent a letter home to parents, informing them of the death, and explaining how the schools are combatting the spread of the flu. Crews were seen disinfecting the city’s schools.
“This is a severe flu season and stopping the spread of the flu remains a critical public health priority, which is why we have recently launched a significant public awareness campaign,” Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said in a statement.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 84 children in the United States have died of the virus this flu season.
