Many New Yorkers say that lawmakers are not moving quickly enough to pass tougher gun control laws.
State lawmakers in New York have several gun control bills currently pending in the state Legislature that have yet to be passed.
Some of those include stiffer penalties for shootings near schools and playgrounds, stronger penalties for shooting at children under 10 years old and requiring anyone convicted of a domestic abuse charge to surrender their weapons.
Democrats say that the reason the proposals haven’t made it through the state Legislature is because Republicans are standing in the way.
“I certainly think there's a real powerful gun lobby as well as a conservative party in our state that has a lot of people worried that if they try to enact even reasonable gun control measures that something will happen to them in a primary or that they won't be seen as a true conservative,” says state Sen. Todd Kaminsky.
News 12 reached out to Senate Republicans Tuesday to get their response, but several messages to the majority leader’s office haven't been answered yet.
