Elementary school students in North Bergen were given free flu shots after a 6-year-old girl died from flu complications last week.
Nevaeh Hernandez attended Lincoln Elementary School. Cleaning crews were brought in to thoroughly disinfect the school.
"We're all very worried, very worried and we just want to make sure that they're protected,” says parent Elfi Melo.
Health department officials decided to offer free flu vaccine shots directly at North Bergen schools to help safeguard against the illness.
“We can now reach as many children as possible. I said, ‘Let’s get it going,’” says North Bergen Schools Superintendent George Solter Jr.
So many students received the shot that officials actually ran out for the day.
"It's a very positive reaction to it. We're very pleased to see they're availing themselves to this opportunity,” says Monique Davis, with the Hudson Regional Health Commission. ”It's just a sober reminder that influenza can be a very serious disease."
The two elementary schools that weren’t able to get the vaccines Thursday will received them on Tuesday. Adults will be eligible for free shots Wednesday at the North Bergen Public Library.
"Everybody is susceptible to it. Especially…adults with any kind of conditions, diabetes, cancers, heart disease, etc. So we urge everyone to get it for their own protection and the protection of their loved ones,” says North Bergen health director Janet Castro.
High school students will be getting the shots next Friday.
