The school shooting in Florida has triggered outrage over the lack of action on gun control and a demand for Congress to do more to stop gun violence.
Parkland, Florida, now joins a growing list of communities that have been devastated by gunmen taking aim at school children. There have been 18 school shootings so far in 2018, according to gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.
After each mass shooting, there are calls for prayers and stronger gun control. Some say little is ever done to help prevent the next attack.
"Here we go again," says Joyce Gorycki, whose husband was killed during the 1993 Long Island Rail Road massacre. "It never gets changed."
Gorycki now advocates for stronger gun laws, and says the nation and lawmakers seem to be numb to the problem.
News 12 spoke with residents who said something needs to be done to curb gun violence.
"Maybe the vetting process needs to be more stringent. We are the only ones in the modern free world that is having this issue," says Kird Azemar, of Westbury.
According to the Associated Press, Nikolas Cruz purchased his semi-automatic AR-15 rifle legally about a year ago. Some wonder if more gun laws would have made a difference in Wednesday's attack.
"Though we are passing more laws and putting more gun control in place, nothing is changing," said Andy Chernoff, of Coliseum Gun Traders. "It's not solving our problem. Our problem is a people problem."
Chernoff says the nation needs to focus more on mental health and the warning signs of troubled people. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) agrees, but says stricter common sense gun purchasing and registration laws must not be ignored.
"This should be a wake-up call that we have to reconsider and go back to finding some sort of gun regulation," says Rep. King.
Rep. King tells News 12 that getting more regulations or revamping gun laws is a tall order considering the majority of the members of Congress don't want any type of gun regulation legislation.
