Three cars, one of them stolen, and an oil truck crashed on Route 25 in Ridge Wednesday, killing five people and injuring others, police say.
A stolen Chevrolet Camaro struck a 2012 Mazda around 11:20 a.m. near Woodlot Road, according to police. The Camaro careened into an oil truck heading the opposite way, and the Mazda crashed into a 1999 Infiniti.
Authorities say the Camaro had been stolen. The crash left a teen in that car dead and sent the alleged driver, Jamel Turner, to the hospital.
Police later charged Turner, a 23-year-old from Bellport, with criminal possession of stolen property and false personation, or trying to mislead police. He also faces another charge for an outstanding warrant, police say.
Investigators identified his passenger as Lonidell Skinner, a 19-year-old who was also from Bellport. The impact ejected him from the car, and a physician assistant from the county medical examiner's officer pronounced him dead at the scene.
Four others died in the Mazda, which caught fire, police say. Their identities were being withheld pending positive identification and notification of relatives, police say.
Rescuers brought the oil truck driver to the hospital with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening, officials say. The driver of the Infiniti escaped unharmed.
Middle Country Road was closed in both directions between Wading River Hollow Road and Smith Road as a result of the crash.
Suffolk Police Chief Stuart Cameron says police had been seeking the stolen Camaro after a tip from OnStar.
"The car exited the Lakepoint Apartment complex by driving eastbound on Route 25," Cameron says.
Although the car was speeding, the chief says it does not appear that police were giving chase.
