Nassau lawmakers have proposed an amendment that would add opioids and other controlled substances to the county's social host law. 

Currently, the law prohibits adults from allowing minors to drink alcohol on their premises or for not taking actions after learning about underage drinking.

The amendment expands the law to include anyone under 18 on the premises taking opioids, marijuana, heroin, cocaine or anabolic steroids.

According to the amendment, a first-time offender could be fined $250. A second offense will accrue a $500 fine. Anyone facing a third offense would face a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail.

Police officials say the proposed change in the law will be another tool to help them crack down on opioid and other illegal drug use.

The Legislature is expected to pass the social host amendment measure next month.
