Nassau County will receive state funding to give out free flu vaccinations to residents, County Executive Laura Curran announced Friday.
She said that over the last four days, there have been 430 new confirmed flu cases here. In Suffolk County, which will also offer free vaccinations, there have been 782 new flu cases in the last five days.
The news follows warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office labeling this year's flu season as a public health emergency. The CDC says the flu outbreak has killed at least 63 children.
Nassau will host three clinics over three days, beginning Saturday, Feb. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nassau County Department of Health in Mineola.
The second clinic is Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Nassau County Department of Health WIC Office in Hempstead.
The third is Thursday, Feb. 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury.
In Suffolk, County Executive Steve Bellone announced the shots on the same three days from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Department of Health Services building in Great River.
Nassau Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein urged residents to take advantage of the county's resources because the flu is contagious up to 24 hours before a person shows symptoms.
"It is not too late to take preventative measures," Eisenstein said. "Flu season does not end now. Flu season continues on well into the spring, and in a typical year it doesn't peak until late winter, early spring."
Since last week, the state says there has been a 35 percent increase in confirmed flu cases and a 2 percent increase in hospitalization due to the flu.
