Three Brooklyn sisters are carrying on their family's tradition of baking sweet Caribbean confections.
Allan's Bakery on Nostrand Avenue has been open nearly 60 years.
Manager Sharon Smith says the community really connects with the bakery.
"People love it. They get a little taste of home; for those who were born in the islands and come here and live here now. Their children get to know a little bit about the foods and heritages that their parents grew up with too."
Allan's was first opened by Smith's father in 1961 and is known in the community for its currant rolls, beef and saltfish patties and other delicious, flaky pastries.
Smith says everything is made in-house including the coconut bake, hardo breads, pan breads, and all of the cakes.
