East End: Handmade wooden canoes
Trent Preszler, the CEO of Bedell Cellars in Cutchogue, makes wooden canoes by hand.
Preszler, who grew up on South Dakota cattle ranch, taught himself how to do it from scratch by reading books and watching videos. He started making the canoes a few years ago, when his father passed away and left his tools to his son.
It takes about a year to do. Preszler's canoes include custom bronzework and hand-sewn seats of leather and hemp.
"It is kind of a lost art," he says, adding that there's probably less than five people in the U.S. and Canada that are actively making wooden canoes.
