An NYPD hero from Long Island received an honor Wednesday to mark the first anniversary of his death.
Detective Steven McDonald, of Malverne, died a year ago from a heart attack. He was paralyzed in 1986 after he was shot in the line of duty by teens in Central Park.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner James O'Neill were on hand at a ceremony Wednesday to unveil a plaque dedicated to McDonald at the Central Park precinct where he worked.
McDonald's wife delivered emotional words her husband would tell her.
"In the darkest times of your life, never let anger destroy your will to live. Give all the love you have to give, and make this world the best it can be," she said.
Before his death, Detective McDonald publicly forgave his shooter. He then became an internationally known voice for peace.
