Hempstead school board votes to put superintendent on leave

HEMPSTEAD -

The man hired to fix the troubled Hempstead schools was put on leave by the school board.

The three-member majority on the embattled school board voted at a meeting Tuesday night to place the new superintendent, Shimon Waronker, on a 60-day paid administrative leave.

News 12 has been told that Waronker was escorted by security to his office around midnight to retrieve his personal belongings.

He is no longer allowed on school property without permission.

Waronker was brought into the district specifically to fix problems that many say date back decades.

School board president Maribel Toure told News 12 Wednesday morning that she is still in shock.

"I am really sad.  I think we are betraying the students. We are betraying the community. Who is paying for this? You are sending a person home with pay with no clear cause of why you are sending him home,” she says.

News 12 reached out to the three board members who are in the majority, but has not heard back from them yet.

News 12 also reached out to the state education commissioner to see if there would be any intervention from that department.  The department had no comment because it said the decision may end up being appealed to the state education commissioner herself.
