Metuchen was hosting a ball drop of its own on Sunday to ring in the new year.
The event was being held outdoors, but city officials sought to combat the frigid temps by setting up 25 outdoor heaters.
“It’ll be a place to gather,” said Mayor Jonathan Busch. “And if there’s enough people here, we’ll keep each other warm.”
The event was set to include the opening of the Town Plaza, complete with a DJ, fire dancers, LED light music, restaurant specials, ice sculptures and champagne-flavored cotton candy.
The ball drop was slated for 7 p.m. but the party was running through midnight.
Attendees were advised to dress warmly.
