Officials are warning about the dangers of the frigid weather as wind chill temperatures dip into the negative and single digits.

Residents were urged Wednesday to dress in multiple layers and cover extremities to avoid the risk of frostbite.

Dr. David Tran, with Northwell Health in Syosset, says that in addition to frostbite, emergency departments see an increase of patients with flu-related symptoms. He also says keeping hydrated is a tip that's often forgotten in the extreme cold.

"The thirst mechanism isn't there, especially with old people, they don't drink enough, and they end up getting sick," he says.

Suffolk County is offering emergency shelters and has set up a hotline for homeless people who need emergency shelter. They can call the Temporary Housing Assistance Unit at 631-854-9547.

A hotline has also been set up for people who need help heating their home. The Home Energy Assistance Program or HEAP can be reached at 631-853-8820 for assistance.
