Social Services in both Nassau and Suffolk counties are opening up buildings to keep people out of the extreme cold.

News 12 meteorologists say Tuesday's temperatures felt like the upper teens. The bitter cold is not expected to leave the region for at least the next week.

Suffolk is offering emergency shelters in Deer Park, Coram, Riverhead and Hauppauge. They also set up a hotline for homeless people who need emergency shelter. They can call the Temporary Housing Assistance Unit at 631-854-9547.

Nassau has three warming centers open at Cantiague Park, Grant Park and Mitchell Field. 

A hotline has also been set up for people who need help heating their home. The Home Energy Assistance Program or HEAP can be reached at 631-853-8820 for assistance.
