OCEANSIDE -

A Rockville Centre teen was arrested on DWI charges Christmas night for allegedly driving drunk with his 15-year-old cousin in the back seat of his car.

Authorities say they were called to Oceanside Road around 6:30 p.m. Monday. They say they found a 2005 Nissan Maxima sideways in the middle of the street. It had crashed into a parked car and a utility pole.

Police say Ryan Powers, 17, had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol at the scene. He was charged with aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, as well as endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Powers was taken to the hospital and discharged. No one else was injured during the incident.

Defense attorney Robert Abuiso said his 17-year-old client has no criminal record, is an honors student at Oceanside High School and was looking forward to college.

He was released on $2,500 bond.
