9/11 victims celebrated with roses of remembrance

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Nearly 3,000 people shared the same fate on Sept. 11, 2001, but each victim's life continues to be celebrated on his or her special day.

Every morning, a ritual of remembrance echoes through the grounds of the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan. That is when a single white rose is placed on the name of each victim who would've celebrated a birthday that day.

The flowers are hand delivered by 9/11 Memorial staff members, including Sean Evans, of Freeport.

The staff members then take photos of the birthday roses when they're placed on the victims' names. The photos are emailed to victims' family members, upon request. Some of the photos are also uploaded on the 9/11 Memorial Facebook and Instagram pages.

There are 2,983 people to honor throughout the year, victims of the 2001 and 1993 World Trade Center attacks.
