Friends and family are mourning the loss of a college freshman from Dix Hills who died over the weekend.
Daniel Michaels, 18, was attending SUNY Oneonta. Police say he was found unresponsive on a couch in an off-campus apartment on Saturday around 12 a.m.
He was in cardiac arrest when he arrived at the hospital, and was pronounced dead.
Police say Michaels may have been trying to join a fraternity. They say a preliminary toxicology test detected multiple substances in Michaels' system, including alcohol and anti-anxiety medication. But the official cause of death has not yet been determined.
Police say Michaels lived on campus, and not at the apartment where he was found. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.
Michaels had graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East in 2017. A scholarship fund in his name has been established and has already raised $13,000.
Neighbors say it's not the first time tragedy has struck the family. Daniel Michaels' twin brother Justin was killed years ago in a freak accident. Justin Michaels was 4 years old when he was killed by a falling tree limb at Park Shore Day Camp in Dix Hills.
