Man accused of stealing cash, electronics from 2 college campuses

Posted: Updated:

Police say they've arrested a suspect behind a string of burglaries on two Long Island college campuses.

Ronnie Garland, 30, faced a judge in Hempstead Sunday morning. He is accused of breaking into several offices at Adelphi University in Garden City and a building on the LIU Post campus in Brookville.

Police say Garland stole cash and electronics, including laptops, a projector and a camera. The burglaries began in September and continued through this month.

Nassau police say Garland was spotted on the Adelphi campus on Saturday, and he matched the description of the suspect wanted in the case. The person who saw him called police and public safety.

Garland, who is from upstate New York, was arrested in Garden City and faces charges including burglary and criminal possession of stolen property.

Investigators believe Garland also targeted several other college campuses including some in Manhattan, the Bronx and upstate New York.

In a statement, an Adelphi University spokesperson said, "Adelphi University is pleased to report that as a result of a safety alert issued by our Public Safety Department, with the close cooperation of local law enforcement, the person of interest in the alert was successfully detained and arrested by the Garden City Police Department."

The statement continued, "All of us at Adelphi have long been committed to maintaining a comprehensive safety and crime prevention program for all members of our community. With the assistance of our students, faculty and staff, and through collaboration and partnerships with local law enforcement, the programs and procedures that the university have in place have contributed to an excellent record of safety."

LIU Post declined to comment on the case.

Police say their investigation is ongoing, and they're asking anyone with information to call the Garden City Police Department at 516-465-4150.
