UNIONDALE -

A tentative settlement has been reached between the family of a slain Hofstra student and Nassau County, according to a Newsday report.

Andrea Rebello, 21, a junior at Hofstra University, was accidentally shot and killed by a police officer's bullet in May 2013.

Newsday reports that the family of that slain student has reached a tentative settlement with Nassau County worth $4.5 million.

Rebello family attorney David Roth confirmed the report writing in a statement, "The parties have resolved this matter to their satisfaction."

The deadly shooting happened at a home on California Avenue, just steps away from the campus.

According to police, 30-year-old parolee Dalton Smith forced his way into the home armed with a gun. When Nassau County Police Officer Nikolas Budimlic responded, the suspect used Rebello as a human shield.

The officer fired several shots which killed both Smith and Rebello.

The victim's twin sister, Jessica Rebello, was also inside the house at the time of the incident.

The terrifying attack left the student body stunned just days before graduation.

The Nassau County Legislature is expected to vote on the proposed settlement during its next meeting on Monday.
