Families of missing Argentine navy crew await information

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina -

Tensions are high as crews continue to search for the Argentine navy submarine that vanished in the Atlantic Ocean over a week ago.

The San Juan, carrying 44 crew members, is reported to have gone missing as it was sailing from the extreme southern port of Ushuaia to the city of Mar del Plata, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Buenos Aires.

Meanwhile, government officials announced Thursday that an unexplained explosion was detected during the search near the last confirmed location of the submarine.

News 12 Long Island is told that officials did give an update to the crew members’ families after the explosion took place, many of whom say they feel uninformed and manipulated.

"I feel cheated - they haven't been located, but they talk about them being down 3,000 meters,” says Itati Leguizamon, the wife of a one of the sailors. “They don't tell us anything, but I tell you, they are wretched, they manipulated us."

While experts say the sub, if intact, may not have enough oxygen onboard to last the members, they also say the crew might have been able to raise a rube to the surface in order to refresh the air inside the vessel.

Argentine officials say there wasn’t any evidence of an attack on the sub.

Teams from 12 nations are participating in the search.

AP wires contributed to this report.
