Many western Connecticut families began treks to their Thanksgiving destinations Wednesday, snarling traffic in some places.

On Interstate 95 in Darien, traffic moved slowly throughout much of the day, although experts predicted the worst for the evening.

"Everything coming out of Boston and Rhode Island was fine, until we get to Connecticut," said Brian Quinlan, who began his holiday trip in Massachusetts before 9 a.m. "All of a sudden it slows down in spots, then it speeds back up again."

Most people who spoke with News 12 Connecticut said they left early in the morning to avoid traffic.

According to AAA, most of the travel volume will occur between Wednesday and Sunday. Although this is not a record-breaking holiday, studies show that this is expected to carry the most volume since 2005.

AAA suggests leaving during off hours in early morning or late at night.

Officials advise motorists to be patient, as traffic is expected to increase again on Sunday when most people head home.

State police also say that they'll be increasing patrols throughout the holiday weekend.
