Drivers from western Connecticut will soon have an alternative to going to the DMV when the state replaces the old AAA service centers.
West Haven City Hall will be the first of several new spots to replace those AAA locations, where people used to be able to renew their licenses. The new customer service center will at first be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but officials say they expect up to 1,500 customers a week.
Drivers used to be able to renew at AAA locations until the association stopped offering the service amid a dispute with the state.
AAA wanted to only offer it to its members, but the state wanted everyone to be able to take advantage of the service.
DMV officials say the department will pick either a credit union, a jobs center or a tax service to house more locations in Fairfield County.
The DMV also has 36 percent of its transaction services available online, saving people the trip altogether.
