Police arrest Lawrence man in deadly Applebee’s shooting

A man was arrested and charged Sunday in connection with a deadly shooting last week at an Applebee’s restaurant in Lawrence Township, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said.
Noel Powell III, 27, of Lawrence, was taken into police custody in Trenton around 2:30 p.m. Sunday and charged with murder in the death of 23-year-old Devin Smith.
Powell is accused of shooting Smith in the head around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday while Smith was sitting at the bar at the Applebee’s on Route 1. Police said Powell took off in a vehicle after the shooting. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
In addition to murder, Powell is also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is being held at the Mercer County Correction Center.
The prosecutor released no further information about a possible motive.
