FDA approves device to help with opioid withdrawals

FDA has approved a neurological device to help addicts combat debilitating withdrawal symptoms.
It's called the NSS-2 Bridge, which is placed behind the ear where several electrodes stimulate nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Its aim is to relieve symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and sleeplessness.
Drug treatment experts say these symptoms are so painful and overwhelming that patients often turn back to opioids.
"It's really a barrier to folks finding a path to recover," says Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds.
He says the NSS-2 Bridge device is a step forward in the recovery process but that it needs to be used with medication.
The device costs $600 and is expected to be available in New York within a year, drug experts say.
