More Uniondale and Hempstead public school students will soon be getting the help they need after school.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in Hempstead Thursday to announce that $2.5 million will go toward creating almost 1,800 new openings in after-school programs offered in the two districts.
"We want to make sure that you are getting all the skill, all the services that every other child has," said the governor.
The money was awarded to "high needs" school districts across New York state. According to the governor's office, the after-school programs help lower school dropout rates and reduce juvenile crime.
