Election Day makes history for Democratic women on LI

Posted: Updated:
WOODBURY -

Tuesday was a historic Election Day for Democratic women in several key races across Long Island -- especially women named Laura.

Laura Curran shattered Nassau's glass ceiling. The Baldwin mother of three beat Republican Jack Martins to become the first woman to be elected Nassau County executive. And she wasn't the only Democrat in Nassau named Laura in Nassau to win a big race.

In Hempstead, attorney Laura Gillen defeated incumbent Republican Tony Santino. She's the first Democrat to win a Hempstead town supervisor race in over 100 years.

And in Riverhead, yet another Democrat named Laura -- Laura Jens-Smith -- was elected town supervisor.

Republican Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney congratulated Curran and Gillen for their victories, calling their accomplishments "historic."

Continuing the Laura trend, Republican Nassau Legislator Laura Schaefer was elected to a third term.

Some voters say they hope Tuesday's election results set a precedent for years to come.
