When Kirk Ingebretsen, of Bay Shore, left his iPhone on the Long Island Rail Road recently, he never thought he would get it back.
"I felt a loss," he told News 12 Long Island. "Not quite a child but maybe a small pet or something."
But he got lucky. Buzzfeed video producer Christian Nilsson and his girlfriend Stephanie Hains found his phone and created a video to document their attempt to return the phone to its rightful owner.
They tried to call any number they could on the locked phone when they finally reached a friend of Ingebretsen.
Ingebretsen was able to call Nilsson and arrange for the phone's safe return.
"I thought for sure he was in the city and he'd mail it to me, but he said 'no we're on the train,'" said Ingebretsen.
The Bay Shore man raced to the LIRR station to meet up with the people who found his phone, but he discovered he was on the wrong side of the tracks. That's when Nilsson asked the conductor to stop the train so he could leave the phone in a safe place on the platform.
Ingebretsen was able to pick up his phone minutes later. He told News 12 that he can't thank the couple enough, and that he would do the same for somebody else.
