Curran says she is 'ready to lead' at Mineola victory rally

Posted: Updated:
MINEOLA -

At a victory rally Wednesday, Laura Curran – Nassau's first female county executive-elect – said she is "ready to lead a government that lives up to our wonderful people."

"The people have spoken loudly and clearly. They are ready for a fresh start," she said at the rally in Mineola.

Republican Jack Martins formally conceded the race Wednesday afternoon, officially ending his campaign. Now, it's up to Curran to find solutions to the well-documented list of challenges the county is currently facing.

They include a multimillion-dollar budget deficit, the presence of a state financial control board that is poised to reject Nassau's current budget plan and a property assessment system that is widely criticized as inaccurate and unfair.

Curran called the assessment system "broken" and said she was ready to delve into the problem.

Nassau Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs was one of Curran's first and most influential backers in the campaign. He believes she understands that there is even more work to be done if she wants to transition from winning candidate to effective county executive.

"It's one thing to have all sorts of great ideas. It's quite another to be able to enact any of them," says Jacobs.

While the county executive's office is changing hands, Republicans maintained their control of the Nassau Legislature.

Curran says she will soon be assembling a transition team. Outgoing County Executive Ed Mangano says he spoke with Curran Tuesday night and pledged his assistance to ensure an orderly transition of power.
