Long Islanders will head to the polls in six days to cast their ballots for Suffolk County district attorney.
It is a three-way race, but the latest Newsday/Siena College poll released Tuesday shows Democratic Police Commissioner Tim Sini with a significant lead over Republican Ray Perini – 46 percent to 32 percent.
Libertarian candidate Chris Garvey is trailing at 4 percent, but 18 percent of voters say they don't know who they will vote for yet.
Cleaning up alleged corruption in the Suffolk District Attorney's Office is clearly a key priority for voters during the upcoming election.
Last week, District Attorney Tom Spota and one of his top aides were indicted on federal charges. They are accused of covering up the beating of a suspect at the hands of former police chief James Burke.
Sini describes it as a similar situation to when he became police commissioner.  At that time, it was the police department rocked by the Burke scandal.
“I've proven that I can come into an agency in crisis, restore integrity to the leadership of an agency and move it forward,” he says.
Perini says he has more experience and is better suited to tackle corruption, gangs and drugs.
“I believe the message is right. I think I've had very strong grassroots support, people who knew me over my career,” he says.
Garvey admits he's an underdog but cautions those who count him out. He says he's what the county needs -- someone from the outside.
“I'm not chosen by the establishment, the political establishment in this county, which has been mismanaging this county for very long time,” says Garvey.
