New York State Police parole officers went door to door Tuesday to make sure sexual predators who live on Long Island were not out and about on Halloween.
Officer Pedro Torres told News 12 that checking up on sex offenders is done year-round but that authorities step up checks during the holiday.
"We are doing this for the community so there is one less thing they can worry about on a night like tonight," said Torres.
Officers said they make sure the sex offender doesn't have any decorations that may attract children. They then make sure the offender has a sign posted on the front door urging trick-or-treaters to stay away.
"They are not supposed to open the door for anyone. They are not supposed to change their appearance – no costumes, no masks," said Torres.
Some parents told News 12 that they were relieved to know there was an extra layer of protection.
"I think it is comforting to know that when our kids our running up to a door, they are not worried about what's behind there," said Andrea Boccard.
