Weissbard, 53, of Stony Brook, is running on the Republican Party line. Since 2012, he has been an attorney at the Suffolk County Legal Aid Society’s Family Court Bureau, where he defends indigent people in child abuse or neglect cases as well as custody cases. From 2001 to 2012, Weissbard was with the Suffolk County Attorney’s Office Family Court Bureau as an assistant county attorney representing the Suffolk County Department of Probation and was a Suffolk County assistant county attorney working in the Family Court Bureau. He had a solo general practice law office in Setauket from 1993 to 2001. In 1990, Weissbard began his legal career as a staff attorney on medical malpractice defense for the Physicians’ Reciprocal Insurers in Manhasset. Weissbard ran unsuccessfully for the state Assembly in 2016. He graduated from the University at Albany and earned a law degree from the Hofstra University School of Law. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1990. Weissbard is a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association.

Whelan, 55, of Wading River, is running on the Democratic, Conservative, Green, Working Families, Independence, Women’s Equality and Reform party lines. She is seeking re-election to a position she has served in since 2008. Whelan has served as the supervising judge of the Suffolk County Family Court since February 2016. She began her legal career in 1988 as a Suffolk County assistant county attorney working on general litigation and special projects. From 1990 to 2007, she worked as a principal law clerk to various justices. She received her bachelor’s degree in English and master’s in policy analysis and public management from Stony Brook University. She earned her law degree from Albany Law School. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1989. Whelan is a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association and the Suffolk Women’s Bar Association. She was president of the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association from 2002 to 2003.
