An Army veteran who lost both of his legs while fighting in Iraq is getting a new home in Melville.
Cpl. Chris Levi lost his legs in 2008 when a pipe bomb blew up near his Humvee in Iraq. News 12 reported on Levi last month when he participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk, put on by the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation.
Levi is now getting a mortgage-free home on Pineridge Street thanks to the foundation.
"It's a way of life, a way of giving them their life back," says John Hodge, the foundation's chief operating officer. "They're proud warriors, and for a period of time it was taken away from them."
The $600,000 so-called smart home will be designed specifically for Levi. It features an open-floor plan, and the entire home will be controllable through a remote and smartphone.
The home is expected to be completed by next Memorial Day. Due to its cost, 100 percent of the proceeds from the Legends in Concert performance Nov. 26 at the Gateway in Bellport will go toward building the home.
