Young boy with cancer becomes NY Islander for the day

EAST MEADOW -

A South Setauket boy with stage 4 lymphoma became an Islander for the day Tuesday – surrounded by his hockey heroes at the team's East Meadow practice facility.

Brandon Bloom, 8, laced up his skates and took to the ice with the team, even getting a big "thumbs up" from captain John Tavares.

"I think he was our best player out there," he said. "You could see how big his eyes were out there, really enjoying himself."

Brandon is receiving aggressive treatment and because of that, his family says he can't actually play hockey. But on Tuesday, he was part of the team.

"I had a lot of fun seeing all the guys and meeting them," said Brandon, who even scored a one-on-one goal against goalie Thomas Greiss. "Like a dream come true."

Brandon's day was put together by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
