The devastating wildfires raging in Northern California are having an impact on a Long Island winemaker with a vineyard in California.
Edward Lovaas from Pindar Winery owns Blue Fox Cellars in Redwood Valley, California, and one wildfire there is too close for comfort. Lovaas is keeping a close eye on his winery through his employees and online from other nearby winemakers.
“We are just on the skirts of the evacuation zone right now,” says Lovaas.
While several wineries have been destroyed by the fires, Lovaas’ place is safe - for now. It all depends, he says, on the direction of the winds that are fanning the flames.
“I thought we were free and clear out of the woods because we had almost everything in, I didn't realize that my winery could possibly burn down,” he says.
The devastation in California could have a major impact on the wine industry as a whole, according to some winemakers. Industry experts say most West Coast wineries have picked their grapes for the season but that the smoke from the fires could taint the fruit for future vintages. Pindar’s owner says that might create a demand from other regions, including possibly Long Island.
