Trump tweets worry Puerto Ricans amid recovery efforts

BRENTWOOD -

President Donald Trump's tweets Thursday morning worried the Puerto Rican community on Long Island regarding the ongoing recovery efforts back home following Hurricane Maria.

The president said that, "We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!"

He sent that tweet following two other tweets criticizing the U.S. territory's financial crisis before the hurricane and describing its infrastructure as "a disaster."

Margarita Espada, of Central Islip, said the tweets make her angry and frustrated.

"Where is his humanity? I don't understand his hate for the Puerto Rican community," she said.

President Trump's HUD Secretary Ben Carson seemed to take a different tone at a congressional hearing Thursday morning, saying, "I have no intention of abandoning Puerto Rico."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized the president saying that we did not talk about Florida's financial problems.

"The people in Puerto Rico are Americans, just like the people in Florida and the people in Texas, and my philosophy is we don't leave until the job is done," said the governor.

Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice responded to the president's tweets, calling them "appalling." Republican Rep. Peter King's office released a statement saying the president has made it clear the military and FEMA will stay as long as necessary.
