A bus for students with special needs erupted in flames in Roosevelt Monday morning.

The small bus had 10 students on board as it headed to a day program at the Family Residences and Essential Enterprises in Old Bethpage when the incident happened.

Everyone on board evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. But only a charred frame of the bus remained when the fire was extinguished.

Preston Glover, of Roosevelt, says the bus was supposed to pick up his 24-year-old sister Trisha Garr before it caught fire. He came outside and saw the bus smoking.

"The next thing you know, the smoke started getting bigger and flames were everywhere, it was crazy," he says.

Glover says his mother rounded up all the students and did a head count.

Another bus was sent to pick up the stranded students. Staff members at the program say a nurse visited with each person once they arrived to make sure they were medically cleared.

News 12 attempted to reach the bus operator, Guardian Bus, for comment. No one answered the door at the company's Oceanside location, and phone calls went unreturned.
