Cheddar Afternoon Business Update 10/6: AOL Instant Messenger to be discontinued

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

The United States economy lost jobs last month, totaling about 33,000 for the first time in seven years.

Analysts say Hurricane Irma and Harvey caused businesses to close and people to stay home, but they didn't expect the job losses to be this bad.

Officials say the loss will likely be short term, with demand for construction workers to help rebuild areas damaged by the storms.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Uber’s iPhone app had the ability to record users' screens, even when it was only running in the background.

A new report says Uber was given access to a highly guarded development tool when putting together its app for the Apple Watch.

Lastly, say goodbye to AOL Instant Messenger. The service will be discontinued on Dec. 15.  A statement from Oath, which combined Verizon's purchases of Yahoo and AOL,says Instant Messenger ignited a cultural shift, but the way we communicate with each other has profoundly changed.
