LI business leaders, politicians tour offshore wind farm

Posted: Updated:
WOODBURY -

Long Island business leaders and politicians on Wednesday took a tour of the Block Island wind farm located 14 miles off Montauk Point.

The point of the tour was to expose the benefits of clean energy to the Long Island business community.

Officials say the next project, the South Fork wind farm, will be three times the size of the one off Montauk Point. It will consist of 15 wind turbines that developers say could generate enough clean renewable energy to power 50,000 homes.

The South Fork wind farm will be located 34 miles offshore and will not be visible from any Long Island beaches.

State Sen. Phil Boyle says the overall feedback from his constituents has been positive, but he has some concerns as well, including whether the farm will be built in an environmentally friendly way.

Officials say construction could begin as early as 2020 and it could be operational by 2022
