Rep. King sees potential upside as N. Korea tensions rise

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

The war of words between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un escalated this week as the North Korean leader threatened to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean.

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) says that while Trump’s speech at the United Nations earlier this week led to the heated rhetorical exchange, it may have also laid the groundwork for a strategy to containing the North's nuclear ambitions.

“Right now, I think we are potentially in a very good position,” says King, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee. “One, the president giving the treasury secretary the right basically to cut off any use of American dollars by banks or companies that are doing business with North Korea. If that's fully implemented, that could be devastating to North Korea. Even more than that though is China saying that it will not allow any of its banks to deal with North Korea. If that's the case, North Korea won't be able to survive.”

At this point, Kim Jong Un shows no signs of backing down. On Thursday he released a statement in which he said about Trump, "He is unfit to hold the prerogative of supreme command of a country, and he is surely a rogue and a gangster fond of playing with fire, rather than a politician." He went on to call President Trump "mentally deranged" and promised to tame him with fire.

A post on Twitter from the president this morning responded, "Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before!"
