9/11 victims honored with charity run in Huntington

Posted: Updated:
HUNTINGTON -

A Huntington community came together Sunday to honor the family, friends and first responders lost on Sept. 11.

Hundreds of people gathered at Mill Dam Park for the 9/11 Heroes Run. During the race, the names of the 43 Huntington residents who lost their lives during the attack were read aloud. A total of 43 balloons were also released.

The run was hosted by the Travis Manion Foundation, an organization that works to support veterans, and organized by Robert Madden.

Many of the participants had a special connection to the cause of honoring heroes, including the race's guest Suffolk Police Officer Matais Ferreira.

Ferreira lost both of his legs after an IED detonated while serving in Afghanistan in 2011.

“We can't forget that our troops are still over there. We did lose a lot of people on 9/11, and it has impacted our lives and it's going to stay with us forever," says Ferraira.

Proceeds from the race will go to the Travis Manion Foundation.
