Athletic field renamed to honor officer killed in line of duty

Posted: Updated:

A fallen police sergeant from Long Island was honored Saturday with a special tribute.

Suffolk Police Sgt. Timothy Henck was killed in the line of duty more than 22 years ago when a fleeing burglary suspect rammed into his car several times on the Long Island Expressway.

A plaque memorializing Henck has been in place at the Sayville Athletic Turf Field for years, but on Saturday, a special ceremony was held to officially rename the field for Henck. A scoreboard bearing his name has been added.

The Sayville High School varsity football team kicked off the first event to be held at Timothy J. Henck Field following a ceremony.

Sgt. Henck's widow, Kathy, says she thinks about him every single day -- especially when she looks at her daughter Jenny, who was only 6 weeks old when Henck was killed.

Kathy Henck says it's moving to know that even so many years after her husband's death, his legacy lives on.
