Officials say a ninth-grade student is in critical condition after being struck by a car Friday morning in Oceanside.
They say the incident happened around 7:20 a.m.
According to police, a 63-year-old man was driving a 1998 Lexus east on Foxhurst Road when he struck the 14-year-old girl.
Witnesses say the girl was crossing in the crosswalk on Foxhurst Road at Harvey Avenue in the direction of the high school.
"I was on my way to work and I saw the whole thing, and it was a horrific thing to see," says witness David Weber. "I pray for the girl and her family, and I hope she pulls through."
Police say the victim was transported to a hospital with massive trauma. Police say the driver remained at the scene. They have not charged the driver.
A statement released by the Oceanside School District reads, "This morning we learned that a ninth-grade student from Oceanside High School was hit by a car and was seriously injured. Our support personnel are on-hand to assist students and staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with our student, her family and her friends as we await further news."
