A proposed bill in the state Assembly would make Narcan kits more financially accessible for school districts across the state.
The proposed legislation would allow districts to pay out of pocket for Narcan – the lifesaving drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose – and then get reimbursed by the state.
State Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R-South Huntington) says the bill doesn't have any downsides.
"It removes barriers for school districts to be prepared for the worst," says Lupinacci.
Last year, Suffolk County had the most heroin-related overdoses in the state by a large margin.
