CareConnect health insurer shutting down

CENTEREACH -

Northwell Health is shutting down its insurance subsidiary in a move expected to affect thousands of Long Island customers.

Alisa Hoerner, of Centereach, had CareConnect and is trying to figure out what she'll get next. She says she's already had about 10 insurance companies since the Affordable Care Act passed, and all of them have either closed, left the state or didn't pay her medical bills.

Hoerner says she was upset when she found out that CareConnect won't be staying either.

Calling CareConnect "unsustainable," Northwell Health officials say they would have made a profit this year, but had to pay $112 million into a risk pool. Deputy CFO Richard Miller says they're not getting any help from Washington.

"There is significant uncertainty right now in Washington with regard to the Affordable Care Act," he says. "That was a component in our decision to exit at this time."

Miller adds that they're concerned about their members and health care providers, including their own hospitals. They want to make sure all the claims get paid before CareConnect shuts down.

CareConnect operations will continue over the next year as people are moved to other health plans.

There are only two plans left on the New York health exchange for the self-employed, and one has a $6,000-per-person deductible.

In a statement to News 12, U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi said the CareConnect situation is "unnecessary" and "avoidable" and a reason why Washington must "mend not end" the Affordable Care Act.
