A proposal to add more apartments and stores in downtown Huntington will be discussed by the Planning Board Wednesday.
Developer John Kean says he would like to add a four-story, 84-unit luxury apartment and mixed-use building along Main Street and Stewart Avenue. He says the project would tear down the old building and replace it with one that would revitalize the area.
So far, the plan has been met by opposition from local civic groups. They say they are concerned about the density of the project in addition to traffic and parking issues that could arise.
They would like the town to consider a building moratorium so that a master plan for Huntington's growth can be created.
Kean told News 12 that the project would boost the local economy. He added that it would not have much of an impact on traffic since most of the current stores would be removed and a new parking garage would be built on the site.
