Lakeland FD commissioner accused of making anti-Muslim comment on Facebook

RONKONKOMA -

The commissioner of the Lakeland Fire Department made an anti-Muslim Facebook comment that has some people asking for his resignation.

Under a Newsday story about a mosque proposing an additional floor, Jerry O'Mara apparently posted: "Let them put a 5th floor on the building and  [take]  them up to the roof and throw them off of it."

No one answered the door at his home in Ronkonkoma, though it did appear there was someone inside. The Lakeland Fire Department told News 12 that there were no district officials available at this time to comment.

When News 12 asked the fire department when an official would be able to offer a comment, they said that they didn't know when or if they would have one.

News 12 spoke with residents who said the comments were "Islamophobic" and said they shouldn't be made by an official entrusted to serve the public.

"He should probably resign…and I used to be to be a fireman myself. You have to watch what you say when you hold a position like that," said Michael Brewer, of Flanders.
