E. Rockaway, Nassau bicker amid camp safety concern

Posted: Updated:
EAST ROCKAWAY -

The director of Rolling River Day Camp in East Rockaway says a stop sign or stop light is needed at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Ryder Place to ensure the safety of campers.

Mark Goodman says the village of East Rockaway and Nassau County have ignored his pleas for years.

"For whatever reason, they have chosen to not take this issue up," says Goodman.

For several years, the county has assigned two crossing guards to the camp for the morning and evening rush. Residents say that it has helped, but contend that it is nearly impossible to pick up their children when a crossing guard is not present.

The village of East Rockaway tells News 12 it's up to Nassau County to decide where to install traffic lights. Nassau told News 12 that it's up to East Rockaway to decide what's best for the intersection.

Goodman says all the back and forth without any action could be playing a dangerous game with people's lives.

"There is no game when someone is lying on the ground dead," he says.

The camp's director says he's seen multiple accidents on Ocean Avenue over the years. News 12 contacted Nassau police requesting accident statistics in the area, but have not received them as of yet.
