Teen faces slew of charges after dispute escalates into fatal crash
A teen from Great Neck is charged with manslaughter and a slew of other charges after police say a dispute escalated into a fatal crash.
Police say the suspect, 19-year-old Christian Arevalo, was involved in an argument with a 20-year-old male acquaintance Friday night. They say the dispute escalated and became physical.
Police say Arevalo jumped into his mother's Nissan Altima and attempted to drive away from Manor Drive when the victim jumped onto the hood of the car.
Arevalo continued to drive the vehicle with the victim holding onto the hood. That's when Arevalo collided with a 2017 Cadillac Sedan on Cumberland Avenue, and then crashed into a curb.
Police say the victim was thrown off the hood and landed on the pavement, suffering injuries to his head, neck and spine.
He was hospitalized, but was pronounced dead by hospital staff early Sunday morning. The victim's identity has not been released.
Police say an investigation revealed that Arevalo was responsible for a robbery on July 17 in Great Neck, and that he had also violated a court order of protection back in May.
Arevalo is charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree robbery, criminal contempt, reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
