Group hosts under-water cleanup in Port Jefferson

Posted: Updated:
PORT JEFFERSON -

Some Long Islanders made a splash Sunday in an effort to clean up a local beach.

Residents and volunteers were at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson for the first ever under-water cleanup.

Island Diving and Coastal Steward joined forces to help clean up the beach, including under the water, and to honor the volunteers' work with a barbecue.

Bill Pfeiffer, from Island Diving, says the divers helped clean up were be properly protected.

"We went in and set up a perimeter with floating lines and buoys and we marked out an area where our divers are going to stay in," says Pfeiffer.

Residents donned scuba gear and battled low visibility in murky water as they picked up trash lurking in the Long Island Sound.

"It's the right thing to do," says Guy Zummo, of Lindenhurst. "We spend a lot of time using this resource so the least we can do is clean up after it too."

Organizers hope the initiative will become a tradition at Long Island beaches.
