Brookhaven files suit over towering utility poles

EASTPORT -

Brookhaven, Suffolk County's largest town, is suing over towering power poles in the area.

As News 12 has reported, the utility poles, which average around 80 feet tall, were installed in April and line County Road 51 and Eastport Manor Road in Eastport.  There are about 200 poles in total.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine says the town knew nothing about the multimillion-dollar pole project. The town is now suing PSEG Long Island and the Long Island Power Authority. The lawsuit claims the environmental review process, known as SEQRA, wasn't properly followed.

"They filed an inadequate SEQRA that was full of holes. We went into court and we're challenging them," says Romaine.

PSEG has said that letters were sent to area residents, and that the new poles are better able to withstand severe weather, but it wouldn’t comment on the pending litigation.

Homeowners say they were never told about the project or given a chance to weigh in on it. The homeowners say they are happy the town is now involved and filed the lawsuit, but they are still wondering what’s going on with the county, since the poles are on a county road.

News 12 reached out to the county executive's office for comment but has not heard back.

Brookhaven sent a letter to the Public Service Commission asking for that agency's help as well.
